Bugfix for the Visualizations Services: The computed grids for very small values of lmax (lmax ≤ 5)
contained extremely large numbers. Unfortunately, this error could have quite drastic consequences for the user:
Since the Java-server-thread did not finish rendering, the
limitation of access numbers could inhibit further connections for this client.

- 9. March 2015:
The Visualization Services (Potato.html, Tutorial.html, PotatoBodies.html)
are now implemented completely in JavaScript (no Java Applets) to avoid Oracle's restrictions.
It should now work for all operating systems and browsers.
The ICGEM-service is now nearly Java-free (on the client-side).
Additionally, users have now the option to download generated images as files,
and in the page "Table of Models" the visualization of gravity models
is now possible with a simple mouse click on the button 'show' (analogous to 'calculate').

- 16. February 2010:
There was an error in the calculation of the Bouguer gravity anomaly:
In the calculation of the topography from spherical harmonics for the thickness of the Bouguer plate the
spherical latitude was used instead of the ellipsoidal.
For the older spherical harmonic topography models this was correct and necessary because they were calculated in this way.
The new DTM2006 refers (correctly) to ellipsoidal latitudes (like the potential models) but we did not adapt our software at this point - sorry :-( .
(Unfortunately the tests for the Bouguer anomaly has been carried out only globally, i.e. ocean-continents,
and regionally for equatorial areas → in both cases the latitude-effect is hardly visible)
⇒ the topography was wrongly shifted in latitude due to the difference between spherical and ellipsoidal latitude
⇒ affected were the Bouguer gravity anomaly (gravity_anomaly_bg) and the Geoid (due to the correction term added to height anomaly)
⇒ error has been corrected
2009

Note: the GFZ RL04 Level-2 gravity field for December 2008
(GSM-2_2008336-2009001_0029_EIGEN_G---_0004) has been updated as the product due to unknown
reasons did not contain C21/S21 drift rates
(see: GRACE SDS Newsletter).
- 1. October 2009:
In the calculation of the new functional Bouguer gravity anomaly up to now only positive heights of the topography model has been considered
→
no reduction over sea.
This has been changed: now in areas with negative heights a Bouguer plate with the density ρcrust -
ρwater is considered.
Warning. This results in erroneous reductions in land areas with negative heights (e.g. death sea or the Caspian sea region).
- 10 September 2009:
Changes in the calculation service:
New functional gravity_anomaly_bg for calculating the (simple) Bouguer gravity anomaly.
- 26 August 2009:
Changes in the calculation service:
The name of the functional gravity_ell was misleading so we introduce the new functional gravitation_ell.
The meaning of the two functionals are:
- gravity_ell: the magnitude of the gradient of the gravitational potential including the centrifugal potential
- gravitation_ell: the magnitude of the gradient of the gravitational potential without the centrifugal potential
Both functionals can be calculated on the ellipsoid or in space (use "height_over_ell").
- 24 August 2009:
The maximum grid resolution for the visualization applet now can be
set up to 0.2° (before 0.5°) making much more details visible.
Usage tip: the most impressive details are visible for such high resolutions, when you use the
"Anomaly" functional instead of "Geoid" for "egm2008" (perhaps with a reduced boost factor of 5000).
- 15 August 2009:
The grids for the functionals
- gravity_disturbance
- gravity_anomaly
- gravity_earth
- height_anomaly
now contain as additional information the column with the
height above sea level
(from bi-linear interpolation of the digital terrain model) of the point
where the functional are calculated

(calculated on the Earth's surface containing the centrifugal
acceleration as hitherto)
-
New Functional gravity_ell for calculating the magnitude of
the gradient of the gravitational potential on the ellipsoid or in space
(use "height_over_ell") without centrifugal potential
-

In the Calculation Service it is now possible to calculate some functionals
also at a defined height over the ellipsoid. This is possible for the following
functionals:
- gravity_anomaly_sa

- second_r_derivative
For this purpose the parameter "height_over_ell" has been introduced.

(Button "Theory of the Calculation Service").
- 9. March 2009:
The release-04 monthly solutions and the GRGS-10-day solutions are now also available
after non-isotropic smoothing (decorrelation). For this purpose the mean model
EIGEN-5C has been subtracted and to the difference the 3 different filters
DDK1, DDK2, and DDK3 after Kusche et al (2009) have been applied.
After filtering the mean model has been added back to ensure that they can be used
in our calculation service to calculate the defined functionals.

(drift rates for C20, C21, S21, C30 and C40, which have to be taken
into account in accordance with the GFZ Level-2 Processing Standards Release 4)
-
New Reference System EGM2008 added to the Calculation Service
(the values for a and f are from the EGM2008-page and GM
is from the model)
The geometrical ellipsoid is 41cm smaller than the one of WGS84 and fits better
the real (undisturbed) mean sea surface heights (mssh).
The value U0 for the normal potential on the ellipsoid (which results
from the defining parameters GM, a, f, ω) ensures that the Geoid of EGM2008
with respect to this RefSys fits the (undisturbed) mssh without offset.
-
The value for the normal potential U0 which results from the
defining parameters of the reference system are included as information into
the grid files produced by the Calculation Service

Update of monthly solutions of CSR-, GFZ-, JPL-Release 04, and GRGS.
- 26. September 2008:
